in Butcher Hollow, Ky.
Loretta was born at home in a poor community that housed Van Lear Coal Mine workers. She had six siblings when, at 15, she met a 21-year-old war veteran whom she married in January 1948. They soon left Kentucky for Washington State, where her husband hoped for work in the logging industry.
Her sister Brenda ("Crystal Gayle") was born three years after Loretta left home, giving them a 19-year age difference.
