Stage name: Tammy Wynette
Birth name: Virginia Wynette Pugh
(As a child known as Nettie or Wynette: pronounced WINette)

Born May 5, 1942 in Tremont, a Mississippi community
bordering Red Bay, Alabama.

"Tammy" grew up on a farm straddling the states of Alabama and Mississippi. Her father died during her early childhood and her mother soon left to work in a defense plant, leaving her to be raised by grandparents. She attended Tremont High School, class of 1960, where she was a star basketball player.

Several months before her 18th birthday and a month before graduation, Tammy wed her first husband, Euple Byrd, a construction worker. To help support her growing family, Tammy worked as a waitress, a receptionist, barmaid and shoe factory worker.

In 1963, she attended beauty college in Tupelo, Miss. where she learned hairdressing.

After leaving her husband, she went to Nashville, where the producer Billy Sherrill of Epic Records put her under contract.
